Three-Tiered System

A unique three-tiered cooperative structure serves rural Missouri, northeastern Oklahoma and southeastern Iowa by delivering reliable, affordable and responsible electricity to 2.1 million people. Each tier plays a distinct role—generation, transmission or distribution—and all work together to serve the members who own them.

Distribution cooperatives make up the first tier. They deliver electricity from substations through local distribution lines directly to their member-owners, and they are owned and governed by the people they serve.

The second tier consists of six generation and transmission cooperatives (G&Ts), including KAMO Power. These G&Ts operate high-voltage transmission systems and manage power supply agreements to support their distribution cooperative members. KAMO is owned and governed by its seventeen distribution cooperatives.

The third tier is Associated Electric Cooperative, Inc. (AECI), a member-owned electric cooperative formed in 1961. AECI provides reliable, affordable wholesale power to its six member G&Ts, including KAMO Power.
